Amman

The capital of Jordan, Amman had its beginning over 10,000 years ago, as attested by unusual life-sized human statues and villages excavated in the northern section of the modern city. As the capital of the Ammonite Kingdom of antiquity, it was frequently in contention with the surrounding kingdoms of Moad and Judea.

The most impressive ruins in Amman date from its era as the Decapolis city of Philadelphia. The Citadel with its many temples and public buildings, the dominating Roman Theater and the public baths exist in the busy heart of the modern city.

One quarter of Jordan's population lives in Amman, the center of Jordanian government and business activities and cultural life. The beautiful mosques, bustling souks and dazzling white-granite homes and office buildings offer a variety of experiences for the visitor.
